Junagadh is an ancient city that once served as the capital of the princely state of Junagadh before India’s independence. The city is surrounded by the Girnar Hills and is known for its historic landmarks, temples, and forts. - Girnar Hill and Temples: Girnar is a prominent pilgrimage site and the highest point in Gujarat. It has a series of temples dedicated to Jain Tirthankaras, including the Jain Temples at Girnar, as well as a Buddhist Stupa. Climbing the 10,000 steps to the summit offers a spiritual experience and a panoramic view of the city and surrounding landscapes.
- Junagadh Fort (Uparkot Fort): This historic fort, with a rich history dating back over 2,000 years, is a major highlight of the city. It includes impressive structures such as the Adi-Kadi Vav, Mahakali Temple, and Bhurkhaiya caves. The fort also has ancient gates, battlements, and step wells that reflect the grandeur of the bygone era.
- Mahabat Maqbara: This beautiful mausoleum is a blend of Islamic and Hindu architecture, dedicated to Nawab Mahabat Khan II. Known for its intricate carvings, minarets, and stunning windows, it is one of the most iconic landmarks in Junagadh.
- Sakkarbaug Zoological Garden: Established in 1863, this zoo is one of the oldest in India. It is home to various wildlife, including Asiatic lions, and offers a great experience for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts.
- Somnath Temple: While not in Junagadh itself, the Somnath Temple is nearby and is one of the most important Hindu pilgrimage sites in India. Located along the coast, the temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas.
